In 2011 DIFN plans to develop a social enterprise section to our work
with the intention of facilitating small and medium business initiatives of
individuals and organisations based in the UK and who want to do business and invest
in Nigeria.
Initial areas for development include
- Retailing
- Property Development / Housing
- Transport
- Agriculture
- Education
- Training & Consultancy
- Tourism
One of the ways we intend to facilitate this will be DIFN’s yearly
Diaspora Entrepreneurial Trade Mission to Nigeria which will take place in June
of each year.
Current initiative
In 2010, an initiative was proposed by members of the Modakeke Progressive Union (a Diaspora organization in the UK) to provide solar power products for the benefit of the inhabitants of Modakeke, Osun State, Nigeria. This area has suffered several years of civil war and its people are slowly re-building their lives. This Development Impact for Nigeria (DIFN) charity initiative aims to facilitate regeneration of the area (damaged by civil war), and reduce poverty and illiteracy of locals by:
- 1. Providing beneficiaries with solar lanterns and small-scale photovoltaic systems to reduce their reliance on kerosene and diesel - which are toxic, and can be explosive if mixed with other liquids
- 2. Improving educational standards because children will be able to study at night
- 3. Encouraging the use of solar power to generate an income e.g. for charging mobile phones or using money which would otherwise be spent on diesel and kerosene, on other items to sustain their families
- 4. Engaging locals in volunteering schemes to educate others about energy conservation and about solar energy devices in rural areas in south-west, Nigeria, particularly in Osun State.
£15 buys a solar lantern and £80 buys a small-scale solar system for a classroom or a several households.
