Volunteering In Nigeria
Diaspora Volunteer Scheme - For UK based adult professionals
In 2010 DIFN was funded by both Department For International Development and VSO to run our Diaspora Volunteering Scheme.
Over 3 placements in January, August and November we took 26 volunteers of Nigerian and African Caribbean heritage on short
term volunteer placements.
Placements were held in
Adamawa and Lagos State Universal Education Boards [SUBEB]
Agege and Ayobo-Ipaja local governments in Lagos,
Lagos State Teaching Hospital, Ikeja
Ipaja Community Link, a local community based organisation in Lagos
Capacity building training focused on continuous professional development training for head teachers, classroom teachers and
project development staff of SUBEB, counselling skills for school counsellors and nurses and other health professionals.
Volunteers also provided ICT and vocational skills training to unemployed youths, ran a Summer Camp for orphan and vulnerable
children and held HIV/AIDS awareness counselling training. See Pics
While we are not sure of government funding in 2011 DIFN will be holding more Diaspora Volunteer placements to Nigeria in 2011
Please contact us if you would like to take part in one.
Youth Impact Volunteering
DIFN is also in the process of holding a special youth focused Diaspora volunteer programme called Youth Impact aimed at young
adults especially of Nigerian / African Caribbean / Black British or Mixed parentage backgrounds. This programme is open to young adults between 18 to 30 years old wanting either to take a useful GAP year placement in Nigeria or a shorter 3 to 4 week programme in Easter,
Summer or Christmas.
